20 Ways To Make Use Of Twitter For Business

By: Miss Sarah

For those of you who have not hear of Twitter before here is a short explanation of what it is. Twitter is a privately funded startup company that was started as a side project in March 2006 in the neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. Twitter is a real-time short messaging service that works on multiple networks and devices. It is used to update people on friends day-to-day activities, world news, and even for businesses. So now that you know what it is you may be thinking to yourself how is it really useful for business? Below are a few ways I have found it to be helpful for my blog.

1. Create an account. Use the search feature of Twitter to see what your competitors are doing and read and learn from them.
2. Add a picture of your company/logo or yourself. People like to see who you are and that way they can relate to you a bit more easily.
3. Talk to other people on Twitter. Even if it doesn’t help your business it shows you are human and are interested.
4. Point out interesting topics on your space and don’t just put things about yourself.
5. Share links to interesting places / websites / blogs.
6. Be careful about always promoting your own stuff. Your fans will like it but not everyone else will.
7. Talk about things that are not business related as well.
8. Try to answer questions like “What has your attention?” instead of “What are you doing?”
9. When promoting a blog post, ask a question or explain what’s coming next, instead of just dumping a link. (this point is in bold because its very important for marketing your blog on Twitter)
10. Ask questions. Twitter is great for getting opinions.
11. Tweet about other people’s stuff. This doesn’t directly help your business but show you care about others.
12. When you DO talk about your stuff make sure it is useful.
13. Don’t toot your own horn too much. (I know sometimes I do this but try to stay away from it some of the time if you can)
14. You don’t have to read every tweet.
15. Commenting on others’ tweets, and retweeting what others have posted is a great way to build community.
16. Twitter helps with business development, if your prospects are online (like my blog readers)
17. Remember that Twitter doesnt’ replace direct email marketing.
18. Twitter works well as an opinion poll.
19. Have favorites. When you are new to Twitter you may not have noticed but there are little star icon next to each tweet. Watch what new followers favor and build off of that.
20. Avoid spammer stats. Its not good to see that you have 3 followers and follow 150 people. If you do this it shows that you haven’t revealed anything about yourself and in turn makes it so that people are unlikely to follow you in return.

Driving Traffic To Your Website Using Twitter

By: Josh C

Recently, I conducted an experiment by using twitter heavily to drive people to my website. When I say heavily, I mean really heavily. I got over 900 followers in 5 days and posted over 170 posts, many of contained links to fun content on my website.

To do this, I simply searched for random people and companies and added them to the people I was following. In turn, about 50% of them followed me back. It was pretty easy, but very time consuming.

What I found was people were eager to follow tweats and become my friend, even sending private messages to chat, but when push came to shove it didn’t drive many people to the website. Furthermore, the traffic it did create wasn’t good traffic. It drove a small amount of people to the site that viewed the page I posted to them and no other pages.

The problem with Twitter when it comes to driving traffic is you cannot easily target people who would be interested in your website. By not having a way to target people based on interests it is simply not worth the time to use Twitter as a traffic driver. In fact, like every online trend that has SEO implications, I was flooded by messages of marketing people trying to do the same thing as me. This obviously dilutes the market place.

My suggestion is to wait for the next Twitter to come along and be one of the first people involved. The traditional ways of driving traffic to your website; word of mouth, forums, advertising, blogs and SEO give you more bang for your time.

It's not just for kids and geeks - Twitter is good for Business too!

5 types of business that should be using Twitter

They’re all talking about it – the online phenomenon for 2009. Forget Google, forget Facebook and don’t even mention Yell.com – Twitter is where it’s at this year!

Founded in 2006 as a way to let fellow members know “what you are doing”, Twitter has expanded way beyond its founders wildest dreams.

2009 is the year Twitter has become more “mainstream”. This has been helped by celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Ashton Kutcher and Jonathan Ross espousing its virtues but also by the number of businesses out there realising the marketing and promotional capabilities of Twitter.

However it’s usually when I talk to potential clients about using Twitter as part of their social media marketing, I hear:

“It’s just for kids and geeks”

“Only IT and Marketing bods make money from it”

and other such comments.

With this in mind, here are a random 5 industries, each with 5 ways they could use Twitter to promote their business:

1) HOTELS

Twitter is fast paced, instant communication, ideal for the hotel & hospitality industry.

Hotels could:

- Communicate last minute offers – Use Twitpic to show pictures of rooms – Post customer testimonials – Request feedback from guests

DM Bonus – If your guests have Twitter, why not DM them a special Twitter code if they eat dinner in the hotel?

2) PHOTOGRAPHERS

While Twitter is seen mainly as a textual medium, it can be visual too.

Photographers, why not:

- Use Twitpic to post a “picture of the day” – Tweet about the photo shoot you’re doing today, so people get a feel for your scope – Post links to your blog/website – Use TwTQpon to offer free studio time (specify purchase of X photos) – Ask satisfied customers to retweet the link to their pic(s) in your portfolio

DM Bonus – If your customers are on Twitter, DM them the link to thier pictures on your password protected server, or private group on Flickr/Facebook etc.

3)ASTROLOGIST

It’s not always easy to get people to sign up to a mailing list on a website if you’re in a very niche industry, but it’s a lot easier to get followers on Twitter.

- Use Hootsuite to run 12 daily horoscope accounts – one for each star sign – Post details of astrologically important days/dates/events – Offer a free reading for every 50th follower – ask people to retweet – Post testimonials from satisfied clients – Post celebrity horoscopes on a weekly basis

DM Bonus – Offer free 140 character descriptions of each star sign – have them ready to cut and paste. Offer them by DM only. (People have to follow you to get DM’s)

4) HOLIDAY RESORT/GUESTHOUSE

If SEO is too competitive and too costly, try Twitter – the only cost is your time, and even that can be minimal!

- Use 12 second TV to post short video testimonials filmed on an iPhone or similar – Use Twitpic to post pictures of your resort – Post about local traditions/holidays/etc – Tweet last minute special offers/prices – Use TwtQpon to offer money off local/on site restaurants/bars

DM Bonus – Guests on Twitter? DM them to let them know they can check in.

5) SPEAKERS

It might be written communication, but I know a few speakers doing very well from Twitter, so if you’re a speaker, why not:

- Post links to audio files of you speaking – Autofeed your calender/blog into your Twitter account so people know where you’re speaking – Post a “tip of the day” each day, related to your speciality – Use 12 second TV to post short clips of you speaking then link to the longer version on youtube/your website – Use Twitter search to find people talking about your speciality/niche – ask them if they can introduce you to people wanting speakers

DM Bonus – Offer a free ebook / whitepaper / mention on your website by DM only. The only way to get it is to follow you so you can DM them.

So there you have it – 5 types of business that should be using Twitter, and 5 things they can use it for.

How Google and Twitter Deal Impact on SEO

By: Sean Gallagher

Google recently announced it's deal with Twitter to include tweets in there search results (to be release in the upcoming months). This is in direct competition with the current Bing Twitter deal and raises several questions about how Google will treat tweets.

Google will apparently show relevant tweets from twitter that will be useful to viewers. I'm sure there will be a complex algorithm developed to do this as Google give an example of skiing conditions at your favorite ski resort as a place where twitter results will show up.

So not all result will include tweets from twitter. One thing they did not announce was exactly where these tweets will be displayed. From past additions to Google search results we can only image they will show up at the top of the results, such as where Google's map listings usually show up or at the bottom of the search results like where related search query links show up. Only time will tell which it is.

This placement of tweets can have a significant impact on SEO. Think about it if twitter results appear at the top of the results pages then users might be more included to click on or just read the tweets rather than to click on a site. I'm assuming you will be able to click on some sort of link associated with displayed tweets.

That also brings up another good question. Will Google display links as click-able from tweets? If so this could be a fast track to getting your site on the top of Google. All you would have to do is tweet about relevant subjects that show up in Google and include a link back to your site. It sounds pretty simple but we'll have to see once Google releases tweets in their search results.

How to boost SEO with Twitter

By: Andrew Plimmer

Webmasters and internet marketers have recently been taking advantage of Web 2.0 avenues for SEO purposes so that their websites will earn more traffic than ever. Social networking sites and blogs have been two of the major targets for some time now and have been delivering rave results.

Most recently, people have been getting into Twitter which falls under the social networking category, but maintains its uniqueness by being a micro-blogging service as well. Now internet marketers are on the offensive in using Twitter as a platform to boost SEO. If you are looking to join in, take note of these unique challenges and possible workarounds.

New Users have a Tough Hill to Climb

If you are getting your feet wet with Twitter, understand that, just as you have to when you join other networking sites, you need to start off slow. The first thing to do is to be a follower of other Twitter members that you may know from other social networking sites. Most likely they will do the same and follow you as well. Having lots of followers is important for targeting others around Twitter and getting your ranking up.

All Shared Links in Twitter have the NoFollow Attribute
In short, your page ranking will not be affected if people click on your link which may be discouraging for SEO marketers, but that doesn’t mean that all is lost. You can still post rewritten URLs that have the necessary keywords on the link so the search engines pick them up.

Twitter has Character Limits

There are two magic numbers that you need to understand in Twitter: 30 and 140. 140 is the overall character limit for each message or “tweet” while 30 is the character limit for live links. It is impossible to go around the 140 character limit and exceeding the URL character limit will result to a shortened URL. Shortened URLs do not index very well with search engines, but fortunately there are a few workarounds.
You can try making use of subdomains on your website that point to the URL of your longer page. Subdomains can easily be customized for free and you might be able to squeeze in a few words within the character limit. You can also create a dummy blog that has similar content but a shortened address with all the necessary words you wish to put. Just be sure that blog links to the actual page that you want people to go to.

Keyword Research is Still Important

Making tweets can be tough if you restrict yourself to certain keywords. But using them are well worth it as Twitter has such a high page ranking. Keyword searches may lead to Twitter pages that contain links to the sites they are promoting. Tap into that after you made enough research.

Depending on what you are promoting, Twitter may not meet your expectations. But don’t let that discourage you because Twitter still helps in getting your site on the search engines. It is better if you boost your SEO using Twitter along with other social networking sites for added strength.

Twitter SEO Tips

By: Martin Sejas

It would be wise to know some Twitter SEO Tips given that most Web experts predict that search engines will be able to provide search results in real-time in the near future.

Companies are already beginning to optimize their Twitter profiles to start building quality links that will rank high with the search engines however; the concept is relatively new to most Twitter users who are using Twitter to help their online business gain visibility. If you are interested in getting on board, here are a few Twitter SEO Tips to help you get started.

* Creating a Username: Create a Twitter username that reflects your business instead of using a nickname that does not really describe what you are all about. The username you choose must have 2 things: it must be easy to remember and must include a relevant keyword.

* Make Your Account Name Different from Your Username: The username you choose should also reflect the nature of your business. It is a good idea to create an account name that is different from your username to make optimum use of keywords and further promote your business.

* Optimize Your Profile: One of the best Twitter SEO Tips is optimizing your profile by using relevant keywords. This includes the meta description that tells people about your expertise and your business. You want to make the most of this description line since it is frequently indexed where others can view it.

* Optimize Every Tweet: Given that many predict that search engines such as Google will make tweets available in real-time, this means that you should be using keywords related to your area of expertise and industry in your message. Make sure you do this strategically and do not overstuff the message with keywords because this will be viewed as spam. Just remember to maintain high quality content and strategically placed keywords.

* User-Friendly Retweets: Create your tweets so that they are easy for others to resend. In order to allow other users to retweet your message, do not use the maximum number of characters. The object of the game is to tweet with keywords and high quality content and design your message to be user friendly for retweets.

* Use TinyURLs: In order to direct Twitter users back to your content, use shortened links. Shorten URL links have significant SEO value since SEO is partially about building high quality links. Twitter can also help your Alexa ratings if you are successful in sending users back to your website.

Although practicing good Twitter SEO Tips will help to set your business up for the future of search engines, keep in mind you must also continue to practice consistent communication with your followers and other members of the Twitter community.

Seo Search Engine Optimization Marketing Tactics

By: MUNISH KUMAR

When it comes to obtaining links to your web site, this isn't always the easiest task. Using seo search engine optimization marketing tactics will help you to save time and increase results. We have some great tips to help website owners get the links they are looking for.

I was told by my parents that hard work pays off in the end, which is great advice. Something else that I was told is that you should work smarter instead of harder. One of the best methods I found to get a lot of quality inbound links to your site without a tremendous amount of effort is to write articles and then submit them to article sites. You can write an article about your topic and then submit it to the top 100 article sites, and this will actually produce several hundred inbound links to your site. For more details go to www.greatseosecrets.com The reason behind this is that many popular article sites offer syndication to smaller article and news sites. Therefore if you post a great article to a major article site, you will then see that your article starts appearing on other random web sites. This produces high quality links to your site, which in the end boosts your search engine rankings.

When writing seo friendly or search engine optimized articles you must take a few things in to consideration. You must create the article with a title that includes your key words. Then you must also place your key terms throughout your article several times (at least 3 times). Typically most sites require that articles are at least 500 words, you can use a word counter to double check this before you start submitting.

Some other great tactics out there for grabbing links would be through reciprocal linking, and simply asking for links. Many web sites will link to your site if you have quality content or if you offer them something to make it worth their time. If you can obtain a link on the home page of a popular site, this can give you some great credit with the search engines. Especially if you are only 1 of few outbound links from that page.

Lastly I will cover some other neat ideas to obtain inbound links. For more details go to www.thesearchengineprimer.com You can actually go to top social bookmaking sites and add your site as a bookmark. You can create videos and other media to post on the internet as well, and then find a way to get visitors to link to your site. Another neat idea is to give something valuable away to your website visitors and ask for a link to your site. This would mostly only work for websites that sell to other website owners. If you know a lot of people with web sites, ask them to exchange links - this helps. Remember whenever you obtain a link to your web site; make sure the anchor text pointing to your website includes your main key terms. This tells the search engines exactly what your website is about.

SEO – Search Engine Optimization – What is It?

By: Zach Hoffman

The Online Marketing medium continues to evolve, but one buzzword has established itself as a stronghold in Search Marketing and this is SEO, Search Engine Optimization. So what is SEO?

SEO – search engine optimization, the technique of placing a website as a relevant source for search engines to reference for information.

As the search engines continue to evolve the complexity of turning your website into a search engine resource for information continues to get increasingly complex.

The following information establishes a sampling of the factors search engines use to measure whether a website is relevant to the search engine:

Meta-tags – the creation of information that is placed at the top of all web page back-end (area users do not see) documents to establish what a website is about and the keywords it should be established relevant for. Characteristics include title, keywords, description, and other references that do exist you can create in your tags – but are known not to have much weight as compared to the three mentioned above.

Images – pictures on your website speak an advanced language to web users as they speak to a user’s vision. These pictures currently cannot be read by the search engine blindly, but you the web page owner can make these pictures speak. The strategies to make pictures speak include proper file names to describe your picture and proper alt tags (alternative information to appear in case the picture does not load); an alt tag should be a brief two to five word description of what a particular website photo is.

Site Map – structure of your website and all the web pages that comprise your current website, this information helps the search engines guide their computers through your particular website and tell the search engine what information it may want to index.

Social Media – involves using platforms to create dynamic data for the search engines to find information about your website from what they may consider to be relevant resources. The most basic form of this media is creating a blog and this is becoming a large factor in search engine optimization success. A blog is the most basic form of website social media and allows for a website publisher or owner to write dynamic content to either point relevant information to their current website or to a relevant source of website information.

Website Address Relevance – when you are on a particular website and you click around onto various sections or pages you want to be sure the information describing your page is relevant to the information the user will find on each page of the website. If you need to re-name a corresponding page, the page being re-named for relevance should have a “301 re-direct” placed on it – this allows for the old page to be forwarded to the new home of the information.

In conclusion, Search Engine Optimization is a continuously evolving method to creating a website to be relevant to a search engine. Methods of Search Engine Optimization mentioned above are only a fraction of current methods being put into play, other methods are currently always arising in the marketplace and we make it our job to stay on top of the rapidly evolving Search Engine Optimization marketplace.

SEO Search Engine Optimization in Belgium

By: David Stevens

SEO Search Engine Optimization is becoming very popular in Belgium. More and more people in Belgium are realising the power and importance of the internet and are becoming marketeers. Eventhough SEO has the funny sounding name of 'SEO zoekmachine optimalisatie' the practice of SEO is pretty much the same as for any other country.

Why do we need to do SEO Search Engine Optimization ? Well to get the higher rank in the Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. It is the duty of the webmaster to optimize their website. What is happening in Belgium is that a lot of SEO companies are offering their services and are doing very well. It seems that Belgian people, and also Dutch people to some extend, are not very familiar with this and thus outsource it to SEO companies.

There seems to me very little SEO training and courses available in Dutch. The only SEO specialist who is offering training in Dutch at the moment is a guy called Peter Jansen who has made the 'SEO Video Cursus' for the Flemish and Dutch speaking market. His video courses are very well done and highly recommended. On the whole it seems that Belgium is starting to embrace the internet fully now.

Here are some great SEO Tips :

Content Content Content
Use a lot of text on your web site. At minimum you would need 100 words per page. As with any business the first step in optimizing your web page is to know your target market. It is imperative that you know who your target is before you do anything else because if you do not it does not matter how good your web site is. If you do not write to the right market you are not going to get business.

Create Meta Tags for your website
Meta Tags are code hidden in the background that tell search engines what your keywords and descriptions are.

Link Popularity
The more links there are to your site the better your rankings will be. Start a link exchange campaign with similar sites in your industry. You can look for link partners or post requests in our Link Exchange Request Forums. The more relevant the page linking to you the better. Hyperlinks are the key element of your websites and its interconnectedness. Without a link from somewhere else a website is not valuable to the search engines. Without a route via which the search engines spiders can find a site it is not going to be discovered and indexed you certainly. Just a few very high quality backlinks will have far greater value to you as a webmaster than a many poor ones.

In an ideal world the link to your site will be one of just a few on a page. It will be a standard hypertext link with relevant anchor text from a respected, content rich, frequently indexed and genuinely high PR page where that page's content is closely related to the topic of your own site.

Beware! Links from sites with no original content, no web presence, bad neighbourhoods, 'link farms' or identikit web directories will deliver little or no benefit to your site.

How A Digital Media Player Will Transform Your Living Room

William Stanford

I have rarely met an individual that likes living with old technology.  Usually it is right about the time when you are comfortable with what gadgets you do have, a neighbor or a friend comes along and shows you their bright shiny new toy, and you know immediately that the your gadgets are now old, and you must upgrade if you want to hang with the Joneses.

Right now, the manufacturers and electronics big box stores are all pushing the Bluray Players and telling you that they are the latest and greatest.  Well, before you go sinking your money into a Bluray, open your mind to the possibility that there may already be something on the market that will spell the end of the Bluray.  If you haven't heard of it yet, it is called a Digital Media Player and it will change your whole idea of how you get your digital content.

Almost everything these days is being built with WiFi technology to allow for wireless streaming communication with the internet.  Everything from our digital TV providers and cable services, to the television sets themselves.  Soon everything will connect to the internet wirelessly.  So what exactly is a digital media player and what does it do?  The concept is simple enough, a digital media player is a device that allows you to connect to your home network and the internet wirelessly to access online digital streaming content like movies and TV shows, and also to stream your personal media collection including your movies, music, and photos right to your living room or home theater room.

What is interesting is that most DVDs that you buy today come with an additional copy of the movie called a digital copy that you can download straight from the movie company.  A recent example of this is the movie, "The Hangover".  After downloading movies and music through iTunes and these free digital copies, with a digital media player you would be able to stream the movie, in Full HD 1080p quality and Dolby Digital sound, right to your living room high definition TV set.  Some people are even creating backup copies of their entire DVD collections onto their home network.  Just imagine being able to watch your entire movie collection at any time with the push of a button.

6 Tips to Optimize Your Website for iPhone

Ordinary websites are receiving more traffic from mobile devices than ever before. Even if you have no immediate plans to serve a microsite to your iPhone visitors, there are steps you can take to make your current website more iPhone friendly. Below we will explore several techniques you can perform to present optimized content for these users.

Using styles optimized for MobileSafari
How does your website look on the iPhone? How will the size and order of your page elements affect an iPhone user's experience? Do you have to zoom into a content area to read content? Can you easily enter text in a search field?

These are some of the questions iPhone microsite development addresses. Consider the number of pixels allocated as padding between your navigation options. If you don't have enough space in between your navigation elements, your site will present difficulties for users trying to navigate using their fingers instead of a mouse. An average persons index finger is roughly 40-70 pixels in width, therefore you should consider leaving extra space between navigation elements or making them larger to allow for easy interaction.

Fortunately, you can make these modifications by using an iPhone specific style sheet (as we discuss here). In this way, it is possible to style your sites content separately for these visitors.

Setting Default Zoom
MobileSafari allows you to zoom and rotate page views to more clearly navigate content, but you can easily minimize the need for your users to do so. For example, if your home page loads with extra space on the left and right sides, this will carry over into the default presentation for iPhone visitors. However, you can instruct MobileSafari to zoom into a web pages content by default.

To accomplish this, we set the viewport width to the width of the device by adding the following declaration to the head of your HTML file:

 <meta name = "viewport" content = "width = device-width">

To set the initial scale to 1.0, add this to the head of your HTML file:

 <meta name = "viewport" content = "initial-scale = 1.0">

To set the initial scale and to turn off user scaling, add this to the head of your HTML file:

 <meta name = "viewport" content = "initial-scale = 2.3, user-scalable = no">

We utilize the viewport meta tag to improve the presentation of your web content on iPhone. This meta tag sets the width and initial scale of the viewport. Add the appropriate viewport meta data to the head of the document to instruct the browser to present your content in as large a context as possible on the iPhone's screen.

iPhone Viewport Orientation
The iPhone supports both landscape and portrait views. You can specify CSS based on viewport orientation which is determined using JavaScript and updated in the orient attribute of the body element. We've outlined some of the benefits of using iPhone specific style sheets in a previous article.

To achieve this, you target the browser with

 body[orient="landscape"]

or

 body[orient="portrait"]

The following javascript detects and sets the iPhone's viewport orientation by evaluating the innerWidth property of the window object and setting the orient attribute of the body element at regular intervals:

 var updateLayout = function() {   if (window.innerWidth != currentWidth) {     currentWidth = window.innerWidth;     var orient = (currentWidth == 320) ? "profile" : "landscape";     document.body.setAttribute("orient", orient);     window.scrollTo(0, 1);   } };  iPhone.DomLoad(updateLayout); setInterval(updateLayout, 500);

Hiding the iPhone toolbar
With one line of JavaScript you can hide the big toolbar:

 window.scrollTo(0, 1);

Include this line of code to the phone's orientation detection JavaScript, and the toolbar will reappear when the orientation is changed. Simply omit this line if you want the toolbar to show. This is discussed in more detail in our article "How to hide the address bar in MobileSafari".

Optimize Images
If you recall optimizing images for 28.8 kbit/s modems you may want to skip this section. Its worth considering the average connection speed of an iPhone user over EDGE is considerably slower than typical transfer rates on conventional computers. As of this writing 3g is unavailable on the iPhone, Nonetheless, considering your user's minimum connection speed should be considered part of your standard website development procedure. We recommend you consider serving re-optimized assets to these users and avoiding the use of large images or other weighty media on your website. Animated gifs are unsupported at this time and gracefully display the first frame of the animation.

No Flash Support
While it may be coming shortly, currently you are unable to view flash content on the iPhone. But what if you already have flash creative on your site? We trust you are presenting alternate content to non-flash enabled visitors, as iPhone visitors attempting to view your flash movies will instead see the default plugin not found image. There are several packages freely available which perform this detection or you can use the tools built into the Flash authoring environment.

These are just a few of the techniques website owners can use to make their content more easily accessible by iPhone visitors. Let us know what you think.

10 New Google Personal Search Blogging, Social Media & SEO Tactics

The new by default personalized search by Google is a big paradigm shift in SEO. Yesterday I wrote about the changes personal search will bring for blogging, social media, SEO etc. I prefer to call it personal search as "personalized" is such a cumbersome word.

Of course personal search is nothing new. It has been added step by step over the years. David Harry has made an excellent overview of these types of personalization. So often we don't have to change everything but just to focus on things we've already done in the past. These blogging, social media and SEO tactics must become standard for everybody dealing with the new challenge of personal search SEO.

So most of the tactics listed below aren't revolutionary. You just have to step up efforts in these directions.

Overall personal search means sites being subjectively regarded as authority sites, whether they are or not (for instance Wikipedia is awful if you ask me), will win.

So at the end of the day you mostly need to make sure your site is viewed by as many peope as possible as an authority site. These people will then click on your search results because they know and trust you already. This way they will basically implicitly subscribe to your SERPS as it was the case with SearchWiki or the Google Web History already.

Link to search results, actually link to those SERPS you rank at 1 with a page that makes sense. Don't make it useless though. Blog about Google search rankings for a particular query for instance.
Ask people to push you up on SearchWiki (you know, the green buttons on the search results). There is nothing wrong to ask your supports to support you on  new platform or in a new environment. You ask them to follow you on Twitter, ask them to move you in their search results as well. Please click the upwards arrow on this blog when searching for SEO blog or SEO 2.0 in case you are logged in to your Google account.
Optimize for subscribers and returning visitors to gain trust and thus for people to click your search results because they trust you. How to optimize for regular visitors not the causal search and social media visitor? More substance less screaming headlines, more follow ups and in depth articles.
Bundle your online activities. Instead of setting ob a network of blogs invest time and money into one single flagship blog with one URL and brand.
Establish a presence on highly authoritative UGC sites, where people usually click but make sure for them not to outrank you. Be wary of Wikipedia e.g. They ma outrank you and then some autistic Wikipedia geek might rewrite the item to fit the 90% male, white, nerd American agenda.
Work together with peers to create Wikis, group blogs, Ning communities and other online social circles that can compete with renown brands, professional blogs and media outlets for attention through it's sheer people power.
Cut down on provocations. Sadly people love the lowest common denominator. In case you disagree with the status quo they will cease to trust you and won't click on your weirdo website again while searching. A dose of healthy opportunism secures your success n personal search.
Write for mass appeal not solely a niche. Advanced SEO is great but most people don't even get basic SEO let alone know the meaning of the acronym. Attract larger audiences by content and postings with mass appeal. That is don't sell out b posting cat images but rely on niche relevant mainstream topics. Don't write solely about SEO
Join larger business platforms like Linkedin, Ebay or Etsy. It's a good idea but never forget that you can't rela on those. Build your brand and reroute your customers to your own online real estate.
Don't use generic names or keywords like another-no-name-seo-blog.blogspot.com to get some cheap long tail SEO traffic but rely on personal and other name branding. My name for instance is difficult to read and remember, thus I came up with onreact, SEO 2.0, Tad Chef as terms you can find me at.
Btw. at the same time Google gets personal it also rolls out realtime search results. So in future you'll have to be

blogging timely
get mentioned on Twitter
added to a Google Wave
etc. to circumvent the need to rank as an authority site in personal search.

Either you get through as an authority or as widely referred to site.

The second way may be easier as people refer to crap as well just to point out how bad it is or how much they disagree.

Still in case you're into long term sustainble SEO 2.0 you probably will prefer the tactics above.

Introducing 10 Traits of Green SEOs

When one of my favorite green blogs was looking for a SEO expert recently I was seriously tempted to quit everything else and do Green SEO full time. It was one of the surprises of plunging in into the world of SEO 2.0:

Some of the most active people on social media are green marketers or rather simply put full time environmental activists using the Internet to fight for their causes.

So I'm not talking about organic SEO or something this time, no I'm referring to green SEO on behalf of mother earth and organizations that attempt to lessen the human impact on it.

While I know many SEOs who help the environment by working for alternative energy companies, embarking on charitable projects for non-profit organizations and the likes there is still another small but hyperactive group of people online who are everywhere on the Web and who have huge impact.

I won't tell any names as labeling people "SEO" would probably harm their image due to most people mistaking SEO for spam. I want to analyze some aspects of these green hat SEOs that set them apart from the rest of the online marketing crowd. Introducing 10 traits of green SEOs:

Green SEOs have a huge fan base on social sites, people who will eagerly vote them up just for having a common cause
Green SEOs are hyperactive power users on social media
Green SEOs get away with self-submission on social media
Green SEOs do not call themselves SEOs, marketers or anything similar in many cases

Green SEOs work like anybody else to make a living, they are not activists solely for activism's sake (you can do that in your teens orearly twenties)
Green SEOs are seldom technical in their optimization efforts
Green SEOs concentrate on content creation and networking
Green SEOs in most cases have only a few if not just one long term "client"
Green SEOs blog very often (regularly)
Green SEOs mean business, they do not just try to stop others from harming the environment they also offer solutions all the time
We can see several patterns here. People in green marketing are outside the SEO industry in the public perception while using the same methods and even supporting the same causes as "real" SEOs. I prefer green clients myself but they are perceived as activists while doing SEO.

It seems that SEO for good causes will be overlooked or not treated as such. People on social media love green topics, and doing SEO for the environment seems to be an accepted practice in contrast to SEO for business or even blogs.

Top 10 Reasons Why SEOs Fail on Social Media

shout by suneko.

Many search engine optimizers are still stuck in the past. They practice SEO 1.0 or less. These SEOs fail to adapt to the new Web 2.0 media environment and attempt to apply rules of the older Web to the new situation.

To encourage some self reflection of the people in the search engine optimization business I compiled a ruthlessly honest set of 10 reasons why SEOs fail on social media. Of course not all of them do, but still far too many. We can do better than that. So if you recognize yourself in some of these traits take a step forward and change your approach to social media.

1. SEOs love to automate
SEOs love to automate. Social media is about conversation, conversation between people. Now how you would automate that? Ever tried automating conversation with your wife or kids? You can't automate conversation without annoying and ostracizing people.

2. SEOs are treating social bookmarking like web directories
Do you remember web directories? When was the last time you used DMOZ or the Yahoo Directory for research? People use del.icio.us nowadays. Although some people try to revive the web directory selling it as Web 3.0 "human powered search" directories are dead. Google thinks so, the users think so anyways. Many SEOs do not think so. Also they assume that social bookmarking sites are the directories of Web 2.0. So instead of submitting to 2000 directories they now submit to 200 social bookmarking sites. Social bookmarking is not about the number of sites you submit to but about the number of users that vote for you on one site and the authority of one user who submits your site, especially if it's social news or social browsing. You might sleep with 200 women but I guess none of them will love you just for the act. Your wife probably will love once you make a commitment to her. Also your friends will like it when you tell them stories but not strangers on the streets.

3. SEOs start yelling at people instead of listening
Hey you, want to buy SEO services? Imagine yourself shouting this sentence on the street. Shouting at people you have never seen before. People who are not interested in you at all. This is exactly what SEOs often do on social media. Again, imagine yourself and your wife or friends. Instead of listening you start shouting at them. Do you expect them to listen and fulfill your wishes?

4. SEOs do not share
When I went full time SEO in Germany in 2004 I was amazed by clandestine atmosphere of SEO. It was as if it was more like CIA not SEO. Information and links were scarce and everybody was stingy with them. Sharing information could give your competitors an advantage. So it was important to keep as much of your know how for you as possible. While the most successful SEO experts at SEOmoz or SEO Book are famous for the knowledge they share the German SEO forums are still full of people who won't tell you anything. They will "reply" trying to scare you off or ridicule you instead of sharing what they know. Imagine yourself on a party and someone asks what you do for a living. You reply "I can't tell you" because you're afraid the person could get in your way as a competitor. Also hoarding PageRank was very important while linking out to somebody who does not link back a sign of idiocy. Why giving away your Google juice? If you do not give away anything, even things that do not cost money nobody will like you.

5. SEOs are sneaky
I am still amazed by some people in SEO. Their first thought on encountering a new service or medium seems to be: How can I sneak in and take away the riches? Imagine this in real life: Yes, it's called crime.

6. SEOs concentrate on bling bling and fetishes not actual results
Enlarge your PageRank? Do you think the size of your pagerank, car or IQ makes you better than others? It's very strange to see people in SEO forums talking about PageRank. They still behave like years ago when it was really important but even more so. They fetishize PageRank. It's not only PR though. It might be the ranking in the SERPS or it might be the silly traffic numbers. They are all just signs of success, but signs that often are misleading. You can have a PageRank 8, be #1 in Google and have 100.000 visitors one day without gaining any real authority or making real sales. Now just think of a braggart like that boasting. Would you like and respect this person?

7. SEOs obsess about numbers instead of value/s
Even the SEOs who care about conversions and ROI tend to have only one value: Dollars. I assume that in western countries you at least share some core values like democracy, freedom of speech and movement, peace etc. Now how many SEO firms display any engagement on this issues? Also I assume that most people love art, music, literature and cherish nature. How many SEO companies speak out on behalf on the environment, support artists, sponsor concerts or invite poets to perform on their behalf? People on social media are real people. They are not interested in what you want to sell them most of the time, but they love the green grass, they love to listen to music, read great stories and look at beautiful or intriguing artworks.

8. SEOs treat "content" like filling or stuffing
When you read why some SEOs recommend blogging you have the impression that it's about content that is only filling in the pages with keyword rich nonsense. Do they care if anybody reads it all? It's like having stuffed animals in the park or ZOO. Would you like a park where the birds that twitter are recorded or a ZOO where the animals are displayed on large TV screens? If there is no life in the "content" nobody will want to look at it let alone read it.

9. SEOs don't get design
Many SEOs still think that web design does not matter or means placing the keywords prominently in the content so that Google can find them. People just take a look at a website and leave instantly if the design is not appealing to them. Social media users behave even more like this. No great visual on the page means bouncing off it.

10. SEOs are selfish
Many SEOs do not give away anything that matters to others. They want to take without giving. If they take, they take for themselves. Social media is all about giving. Many people assume that giving and sharing is the only acceptable way to act on social media. I do not agree with that, because this way you would only work for free for companies who own this social media. You need to give to be able to take though. If the people know you, have gotten attention from you or something else that has value on the Internet like links, recommendations or feedback they are willing to listen to you and also to give.

Now who the hell am I to tell you these things? Well, I'm in SEO for more than 4 years now and I still don't believe that SEO is all that I described above. These 10 reasons why SEOs fail on social media are aberrations. These are the mistakes people are making on the Web. Not only SEOs do them, I see plenty of people outside of SEO doing that. So just take a look at what you do online and then do not these mistakes again.

I've made some of these mistakes myself like obsessing with PageRank, traffic but mostly I was able to omit these as I was on the Web since 1997, meaning 7 years before starting with SEO so I knew how to act online without alienating people. Try to be a human being first and then a SEO on top of that. Do not approach people as a marketer on social media. This is the most important thing.

50 Ways to use Social Media, listed by Objective

Chris Brogan, who continues to dazzle us with his thoughtful and helpful social media blog posts (I recommend subscribing to him) lists out "50 Ways Marketers Can use Social Media to Improve Their Marketing".

In twitter, Jon Burg suggests the lists could be segmented to further help understanding, I recommenced doing this by the 5 social computing objectives we've found at Forrester.

I've taken Chris's exact list, but have segmented it into the five objectives. This way, you're not randomly choosing tactics without first having a goal in mind. Of course, the first thing to do is to first understand how your community uses social technologies, start by using this free social technographics profile generator.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Listening: Gleaning market and customer insight and intelligence

10. Build sentiment measurements, and listen to the larger web for how people are talking about your customer.
11. Learn which bloggers might care about your customer. Learn how to measure their influence.
14. Build conversation maps for your customers using Technorati.com , Google Blogsearch, Summize, and FriendFeed.
21. Collect case studies of social media success. Tag them "socialmediacasestudy" in del.icio.us.
25. Search Summize.com for as much data as you can find in Twitter on your product, your competitors, your space.
32. Make WebsiteGrader.com your first stop for understanding the technical quality of a website.
33. Make Compete.com your next stop for understanding a site's traffic. Then, mash it against competitors' sites.
34. Learn how not to ask for 40 pieces of demographic data when giving something away for free. Instead, collect little bits over time. Gently.
38. Track your inbound links and when they come from blogs, be sure to comment on a few posts and build a relationship with the blogger.
39. Find a bunch of bloggers and podcasters whose work you admire, and ask them for opinions on your social media projects. See if you can give them a free sneak peek at something, or some other "you're special" reward for their time and effort (if it's material, ask them to disclose it).

2) Talking: Engaging in a two way discussion to get your message out (and get messages in)

2. Build blogs and teach conversational marketing and business relationship building techniques.
5. Create informational podcasts about a product's overall space, not just the product.
8. Check out Twitter as a way to show a company's personality. (Don't fabricate this).
9. Couple your email newsletter content with additional website content on a blog for improved commenting.
13. Try out a short series of audio podcasts or video podcasts as content marketing and see how they draw.
19. Experiment with the value of live video like uStream.tv and Mogulus, or Qik on a cell phone.
23. Explore distribution. Can you reach more potential buyers/users/customers on social networks.
24. Don't forget early social sites like Yahoogroups and Craigslist. They still work remarkably well.
26. Practice delivering quality content on your blogs, such that customers feel educated / equipped / informed.
28. Turn your blog into a mobile blog site with Mofuse. Free.
30. Ensure you offer the basics on your site, like an email alternative to an RSS subscription. In fact, the more ways you can spread and distribute your content, the better.
40. Learn all you can about how NOT to pitch bloggers. Excellent resource: Susan Getgood.
41. Try out shooting video interviews and video press releases and other bits of video to build more personable relationships. Don't throw out text, but try adding video.
44. Experiment with different lengths and forms of video. Is entertaining and funny but brief better than longer but more informative? Don't stop with one attempt. And try more than one hosting platform to test out features.

3) Energizing: Letting your customers tell your prospects on your behalf (viral, word of mouth)

1. Add social bookmark links to your most important web pages and/or blog posts to improve sharing.
3. For every video project purchased, ensure there's an embeddable web version for improved sharing.
4. Learn how tagging and other metadata improve your ability to search and measure the spread of information.
12. Download the Social Media Press Release (pdf) and at least see what parts you want to take into your traditional press releases.
36. Help customers and prospects connect with you simply on your various networks. Consider a Lijit Wijit or other aggregator widget.
47. Spread good ideas far. Reblog them. Bookmark them. Vote them up at social sites. Be a good citizen.

4) Supporting: Getting your customers to self-support each other

6. Build community platforms around real communities of shared interest.
7. Help companies participate in existing social networks, and build relationships on their turf.
15. Experiment with Flickr and/or YouTube groups to build media for specific events. (Marvel Comics raised my impression of this with their Hulk statue Flickr group).
18. Start a community group on Facebook or Ning or MySpace or LinkedIn around the space where your customer does business. Example: what Jeremiah Owyang did for Hitachi Data Systems.
29. Learn what other free tools might work for community building, like MyBlogLog.
35. Remember that the people on social networks are all people, have likely been there a while, might know each other, and know that you're new. Tread gently into new territories. Don't NOT go. Just go gently.
37. Voting mechanisms like those used on Digg.com show your customers you care about which information is useful to them.

5) Embracing: Building better products and services through collaboration with clients

31. Investigate whether your product sells better by recommendation versus education, and use either wikis and widgets to help recommend, or videos and podcasts for education.
50. Use the same tools you're trying out externally for internal uses, if that makes sense, and learn about how this technology empowers your business collaboration, too.

Strategy, Training, and Planning
While not one of the 5 objectives, many of these aren't directly social media tactics, but they are great rules of thumb.

16. Recommend that your staff start personal blogs on their personal interests, and learn first hand what it feels like, including managing comments, wanting promotion, etc.
17. Map out an integrated project that incorporates a blog, use of commercial social networks, and a face-to-face event to build leads and drive awareness of a product.
20. Attend a conference dealing with social media like New Media Expo, BlogWorld Expo, New Marketing Summit (disclosure: I run this one with CrossTech), and dozens and dozens more. (Email Chris for a calendar).
22. Interview current social media practitioners. Look for bridges between your methods and theirs.
27. Consider the value of hiring a community manager. Could this role improve customer service? Improve customer retention? Promote through word of mouth?
42. Explore several viewpoints about social media marketing.
43. Women are adding lots of value to social media. Get to know the ones making a difference. (And check out BlogHer as an event to explore).
45. Work with practitioners and media makers to see how they can use their skills to solve your problems. Don't be afraid to set up pilot programs, instead of diving in head first.
46. People power social media. Learn to believe in the value of people. Sounds hippie, but it's the key.
48. Don't be afraid to fail. Be ready to apologize. Admit when you've made a mistake.
49. Re-examine who in the organization might benefit from your social media efforts. Help equip them to learn from your project.

Promotional Content... It's the little things that count

Edward B. Toupin

Promotional content is the invisible content in the various recesses of a
Web page. This type of content is used by search engines and directories to
properly categorize your site and its pages during indexing.

--- Site Title ---

The title is the first thing a search engine displays as a result of a
search. This makes it imperative that the title contains something readable
and descriptive. Do not place a bunch of redundant terms in your
title---make sure that the title can be read as a sentence. If the reader
cannot understand the meaning of the title, then chances are they will not
visit your site.

Once you create your page title, place it once within the header of the page
using the
many as five to ten times within the header of their page! This is good in
that your relevance increases from the number of keywords; however, this
repetitive approach is poor netiquette and is usually not accepted by most
search engines.

--- META Tags ---

Meta Tags are information fields located in the header of a Web page. These
tags store information about your browser, keywords, site description, and
authoring information. The two main Meta Tags are "description" and
"keywords." The "description" tag contains a short description of your page
while the "keywords" tag contains a search keyword list for your page.
These two Meta Tags are used by search engines to index your site and are
critical elements of every Web page. When your site is indexed, users can
enter search topics into the search engine to locate your site based on
these two tags.

The Meta Tags should look like this in the of your Web page:

To ensure the proper indexing of your page, you will have to devise a
content scheme that targets numerous types of search engines. Note that
different search engines will index your site in different ways, depending
on the content. For instance, the following list provides information on the
different ways that search engines can index your site:

* Some search engines look for an agreement between the description,
keyword, title, and body.

* Some search engines use only the information located in the first line of
the body of the page.

* Some search engines use a combination of the Meta Tags and the body
content to weight your page based upon consistency.

Obviously, you would want to maintain a consistent content and style
throughout your page. It is important, however, to learn how the different
types of search engines work to have your page properly positioned in the
lists.

--- Hidden Form Fields ---

Once you've developed the keywords for your site, you'll find that you still
have over a dozen or so discarded phrases and words that are relevant to
your page. Your Meta Tags are probably filled to the maximum 255 character
limit and that the first line of your page body is a graphic and contains no
pertinent text. Forcing any of these additional phrases and keywords into
the page can get you rejected from several search engines for "keyword
stuffing," described below.

These types of dilemmas are quite common for many Web page developers, but
the solution is simple: a hidden form field. This form field is identical to
every other form field (e.g. input fields, radio buttons, check boxes,
etc.), however, it cannot be seen on the page in a browser.

The hidden form fields go in the body of the Web page and look like the
following:

Many search engines will recognize hidden form fields and use the
information to index your site in the same manner as they would standard
text in the body of your page. Some search engines ignore such fields,
however, it is important to create pages that are acceptable across all
search engines.

Hidden form fields can be used as the first line of text in your Web page
and should reside in your page before any other content. The reason for this
placement is that most search engines will only use the first 2,048
characters in a document. With hidden form fields, you can still get those
extra keywords into your document without forfeiting space and layout.

--- Keywords ---

Keywords are one of the more important elements of a Web page since they
describe the page to which they belong. The keywords that you select for
your site must be relevant to the page as well as frequently used within the
page's content.

Relevant keywords provide a better position in a search engine for your
target market. For instance, if your site is specific to a new piece of
financial software, it's important to stress the keywords that best describe
the general and specific characteristics of the software. If someone
performs a search for "automobile" and your site appears, it's certain that
you will get a few users. The problem is that these users will do you no
good since they are interested in another topic.

Obviously, if you're selling some product that's important to a wide range
of markets, then nearly any choice of keywords would be relevant to your
site. The point is that you want to ensure that you're bringing in only
those users that are interested in what your site has to offer. In this way,
you are maximizing your marketing effort.

The following rules may not make sense immediately, however, by following
them, you're sure to increase your search engine position as well as the
number of hits your site receives:

* Plural Form of Keywords
When a user performs a search, it's unlikely that they will enter a search
term that exactly matches the keywords you selected for your site. In some
cases, the user will enter the singular form of a keyword and in others,
they may enter the plural form. It's essential to capture both forms of a
keyword to maximize your exposure!

* Repeat Important Keywords
In the days of old, we could repeat a keyword numerous times to increase the
relevancy of a site in a search engine. This repetition allowed sites to be
placed higher in the search engine's list so that the user would see that
site first. Today, search engines filter out those sites that over-repeat
keywords. It's best to repeat the most important keywords no more than twice
to increase your relevancy without being eliminated.

* Diversify Keyword Meanings
Assume that every user has a different vocabulary--some users say "book"
while others may say "publication" or "document." Each word refers to the
same thing, however, unless your keywords are properly selected, you may
only get one-third of your potential hits! When devising your keyword
scheme, take into account the different forms of a given keyword. Create the
keywords important to your site in such a way that, regardless of the search
terms used by a user, your site will appear in the results list.

* Keyword Variations
Consider the fact that users will not enter the keywords into a search
engine the same way every time. For instance, some users may enter "real
time software" while others may enter "real-time software" or "realtime
software." Think about the keyword variations to ensure the capture of as
many users as possible. Also, consider common misspellings of keywords. I
know many intelligent individuals who tend to misspell certain words because
of the phonetic spelling of the word---consider "eves" and "eaves." If a
user consistently misspells such a word and you happen to sell plant hangers
for under eaves, you might lose potential clients.

* Keyword Combinations and Phrases
Some search engines will only take the first 255 characters of a keyword
list, while others accept a nearly unlimited list of keywords. The problem
is that you must target the 255-character limitation to be accepted by as
many search engines as possible. One method to accommodate the keyword list
limitation is to use phrases that best describe the page. For instance, I
could use "ebook marketing" as a phrase that could be found with several
combinations of search topics in a search engine. Another method is to
ensure that the most relevant keywords are located at the front of the
keyword list---even with a 255-character limitation, the most important
keywords are accepted.

--- Keyword Selection ---

Your objective is to attract as many relevant visits to your site as
possible. With that in mind, you will have to select keywords that are
commonly used by users and that are relevant to your site.

You can easily attract users by entering such keywords as "naked women,
adult, sex, ..." into your keyword list. Since these are some of the most
searched-for keywords, I can guarantee that your site will get hits. Do you
think that someone searching for pornography is going to spend very much
time on your page? The problem here is that you will be attracting people
who won't provide a relevant hit to your site. This tactic wastes bandwidth,
time, and money.

--- Developing Keyword Lists ---

Using the information we've reviewed, let's look at creating a keyword list
for a page. This is actually a more difficult task then creating the page
itself since you must determine the best keywords that describe your page.
To begin this task, let's ask ourselves: "how would people begin to search
for a site like mine?"

Immediately, you could come up with about three-dozen keywords to place in a
keyword list, however, many of the keywords that you think are relevant may
turn out to be useless. Think about how you perform searches for certain
information and apply that experience to the selection of keywords for your
page. You'll find that the time taken to create a good keyword list will be
most beneficial.

The best way to weed out useless keywords is to use the steps outlined in
the following list. These steps are proven and have worked on several sites
I've marketed.

* Create an exhaustive list of words that describe your site.
* Review and eliminate words that are least descriptive or redundant.
* Create plural versions of words without altering their form.
* Consider and note misspelling variations.
* Combine words into phases.
* Eliminate duplicate phrases.
* Eliminate phrases with words duplicated in other phrases.
* Check for other words or phrases that can diversify the list.
* Create a comma-delimited list of all phrases and remaining words.
* Move and order the most relevant words to the front of the list.
* Duplicate the four more important words and phrases twice.
* Ask an associate to review the words and phrases.
* Ask an associate to edit the list based on their search preferences.
* Clean up and limit the list to 255 characters.
* Perform searches using your keywords to locate other relevant sites.
* Go to these sites to see how they created their keyword list.

What's in a Listing? Do a Search of your Site or Ezine.

Donna Sweat

Recently while doing a search for content to put in my
ezine, I thought I might see just how many listings I
had for my ezine,"Dee's Helpful Info." I typed my
ezine name into the search bar and hit enter. I was
amazed with the results. There were several hundred
listings, many of which I had forgotten about.
I began with the top listing, working my way though the
huge list. Right away,I ran into problems.

1] I did not have Id's and passwords for some of the
listing updates. As a new entrepreneur months ago,I used
Netscape 4.7,which had no ability to keep these
important pieces of information.I recommend using
Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher along with a great
little companion,Gator! Both remember these tidbits of
information for you.Gator will accept more than I
user, and my children wouldn't be without him.You can
download the most recent version at

2] Once I viewed my listing,I was shocked at the
information listed. This really is old content,I
thought. The summary: Update often! At least monthly
and keep a list of the sites you submit a listing to.
I had not only increased subscribers by hundreds, but I
also designed a new web site, and these listings sent
everyone to a "non-existent" site! And to top this all
off, my subscription address had also changed. I
started out using Aureate Group Mail, progressed to
listbot, got all settled in and listbot folds..so I
moved on to Topica. The moral of this tip:If you make
any important changes, UPDATE!

3] Moving down the list...Now we have a new problem,we
can't update this listing because there is no contact
e-mail or login box.Be careful of sites like this one.

4] Now we are finding listings not related to my
newsletter at all. Why? The key words are Dee's,
Helpful,Info. and Newsletter. One or all of these
describe many other listings not related to my
newsletter.Maybe I should change our newsletter name?

Now lets change to another search engine.
I have tried several but lets face it, Yahoo is the
best.
Now you ask.....what's the point to this article?
The point is...your losing business if your listing is
not correct! A wrong e-mail address, or web site
url,can take away business from your site.
Always stay a step ahead..
UPDATE YOUR LISTINGS OFTEN!

Smart Goto Gambits

 John Gergye

Feeling gouged by Goto.com?
A pawn in a game of Gotcha?
Need a game plan as to what to do next?

I've seen a lot of angry spleen venting over the recentchanges in GoTo.com's pricing policy. Problem is, goingpostal won't change it. That's the way it is. Like Yogi,we've now got to be smarter than the average bear. So, Iwanted to offer some resources for improved Pay-Per-Click(PPC) efficiency.

For starters, I don't want to rehash the obvious. I mean Icould tell you not to touch those one cent bids (well, duh!)as they are grandfathered in until September 1. Or that youshould make your bids work harder with better titles anddescriptions. Or suggest checking out other PPCs to loweryour average cost per bid. Still...

GoTo Gambit #1

Here's a useful tool to see what keywords might run you inother PPCs. Just plug in keywords and a maximum bid foreach. By return email you'll discover where your proposedmax bid would slot you in the bidding hierarchy. Prettyslick, huh? Makes it easy to find the lowest cost PPC deals. http://www.did-it.com/prospector.htm/

GoTo Gambit #2

Put on your thinking cap and come up with relevant two andthree-word phrases. Why? Efficiency. Phrases have fewertotal searches. Bids for those top spots cost less. And theyusually give you better click-through rates.

Stuck? The best tool I've found for coming up with phrasesis the new and improved keyword wizard. Just eliminate oneword suggestions and in a matter of minutes you'll have tonsof search phrase possibilities. http://www.jimtools.com/

GoTo Gambit #3

How much can you afford to bid? Don't know? Well, it allcomes down to three letters: ROI. Return On Investment. There's a handy form that was specifically designed to helpyou find out how much you can bid profitably. http://www.payperclickcalculator.com/

Once you know that, head over to the Goto.com KeywordInterrogator and enter a keyword. It returns a list ofsearch terms along with the number of searches and the Top10 (or however many you want) bids for each. Bid away afterchecking here. http://www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/goto.cgi?action=reset&ti=985821682/

GoTo Gambit #4

Make every click count. If a visitor doesn't buy, do you usea pop-up box to ask them to sign-up for your ezine or a minicourse as a fallback? You would at least get something outof the click.

GoTo Gambit #5

I assume you know which keywords send you the most traffic?Guard those puppies like a junk yard dog! Don't know how?Piece of cake with this next FREE tool. It shows you whereyou can save money by keeping you on top of bid gaps. Thatis, where you can lower your bid and still not lose yourposition. I mean, why over bid it you don't have to? http://www.positionguardian.com/

Or you can pay to automate this task using PPCBidTracker orKeyword Bid Optimizer (KBO). Pricing may favor KBO.Especially with multiple domains. http://www.PPCBidTracker.com/http://www.paidsearchenginetools.com/

GoTo Gambit #6

Ever consider optimizing your site for GoTo's default searchengine, Inktomi? You might want to. That way, if a searchterm at GoTo.com doesn't have enough (or any) bids, it pullsin results from Inktomi. Top positions there could mean freetraffic from GoTo. Don't know much about Inktomi? Noproblem. Get help at this forum: http://searchengineforums.com/bin/Ultimate.cgi/

GoTo Gambit #7

Finally, while not really a gambit, a FREE piece of softwareI can't live without since GoTo's suggestion tool is downtoo much, is Good Keywords. It works great and is a big helpin getting the most from the PPCs. http://www.softnik.com/?gkw/

Hopefully these suggestions will save you time and/or money. And make the pain of the recent pricing decrees at Goto.comeasier to swallow.
